The Weather Channel has acquired Weather Underground in an effort to expand its variety of online offerings. Weather Underground, which currently offers its own web site and weather-related services, will be sharing its features with The Weather Channel; its interactive weather map WunderMap as well as its company blog are scheduled to be included at weather.com in the next few months. It won’t be a one-way street, either, with Weather Underground’s Jeff Masters writing in a recent blog post that his company will also be using The Weather Channel’s resources to improve Weather Underground’s site as well. The Weather Channel recently launched a revamped iOS app to improve its mobile feature set, and with Weather Underground currently providing weather data for Google, the acquisition will no doubt only strengthen The Weather Channel’s position.
