Samsung will start producing “flexible” AMOLED displays this quarter, according to Korean IT news website DDaily. The new Youm panels will be very thin — around 0.6mm — in comparison to the current-generation which measures around 1.8mm. Although the Korean conglomerate has shown off bendable, rollable displays in the past, DDaily says that the initial production run will still be protected by inflexible glass.

What we'll see from Samsung then, initially at least, are incredibly thin panels measuring around 1mm thick with protective glass on top, rather than the plastic-fronted flexible panels of the future. Samsung's initial plan to release a device with a Youm display by the end of 2012 doesn't seem too far off, and the company has an internal goal to mass-produce truly flexible displays by 2014.
