If the NES version of Super Mario Bros. is just a little too modern for you, one developer has decided to remake the game on an even older machine — the Atari 2600. AtariAge forum goer Sprybug has released a demo of the project, which reimagines the classic platformer for the even more classic console. So far only level 1-1 is playable, and obviously things have been scaled back quite a bit — for instance, when you hit a block containing a mushroom, you’ll receive it automatically instead of having to chase it down.

But in spite of the obvious technical limitations, the game still looks and feels remarkably familiar. There are goombas, you can shoot fireballs, and the iconic theme song is still recognizable. While this isn’t the first time a classic has been “demade” for the 2600 — Ed Fries, former VP of game publishing at Microsoft, famously remade Halo for Atari’s console — it’s still an impressive feat.
