One month after its most successful desktop OS launch ever, Apple has pushed out the first major software update for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. The bump to version 10.8.1 carries a rather small file size, suggesting that the fixes included here are relatively minor in scale. Apple’s release notes bear that out, detailing a number of improvements to Migration Assistant, Microsoft Exchange support, and the resolution of a bug that could prevent iMessages from being sent.

The update also addresses an issue some owners of the Thunderbolt display were experiencing when attempting to play audio through Apple’s external monitor. Apart from that, Apple is promising “general operating system fixes that improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac.” To download the update, open up the Mac App Store on your hardware of choice — just be aware you’ll need to restart your machine to get up to date with the latest OS X offering.
