Apple isn’t the only company to be moving away from Google Maps. Amazon has just released a developer kit for its own mapping system, allowing app builders to transition from using Google Maps to the Amazon Maps API. There aren’t too many details available about the new tool — currently available by invitation only — but it seems to promise the same basic functionality as Google Maps, including map or satellite imagery and custom overlays. It should work on “most” Kindle Fire tablets and offer location-based mapping. We’ve been hearing about a new map tool from Amazon since before the Kindle Fire HD launched, when Nokia was rumored to be lending its support. So far, little is known about the new Maps, but developers can request access here.

Update: The earlier rumors, it appears, were correct. Nokia has told TheNextWeb that it licensed its Nokia Location Platform (already used in Bing Maps) to Amazon, meaning that the company has left Google in favor of one of its biggest competitors.
