While President Obama has appealed to the technology crowd with appearances on Reddit and Google+, other members of his administration aren’t quite so technologically inclined — in fact, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has admitted that she doesn’t even use email. Napolitano was recently asked about her security practices during a cybersecurity summit co-hosted by the National Journal, to which she replied, “Don’t laugh, but I just don’t use e-mail at all.” And as the New York Daily News reports, Napolitano’s predecessor Michael Chertoff also stayed away from email, forgoing it during his entire tenure. While it may seem a strange decision for the head of a department whose mission involves, among other things, to “safeguard and secure cyberspace,” Napolitano says that not having an email account means that she is “very secure.”
