AT&T has announced that it will be partnering with the state of Tennessee to launch a trial of its emergency 911 SMS service. According to AT&T, the trial will make use of the new Emergency Service IP Network in the state, and will allow subscribers to send 911 SMS messages to Tennessee call centers. The carrier originally announced plans to launch a “Text to 911” trial back in June, and the plan is to expand nationwide sometime in 2013. Of course, AT&T isn’t the first carrier getting into emergency texting — in May Verizon announced a partnership TeleCommunication Systems and a goal to launch a nationwide 911 messaging service by early next year.
