Microsoft has started to integrate its voice and video calling service, Skype, into its Outlook desktop email client. A Skype 6.1 update for Windows now includes the ability to call any mobile or landline within Outlook. Microsoft has also built-in online status and contact information into Outlook contact cards alongside the ability to trigger instant messages from the mail client.

Alongside the Outlook integration, the Skype interface has been updated to make adding contacts easier with the ability to search for Skype users from the contacts list. A fresh Skype version for the Mac also adds a click to call feature to dial numbers from Safari on Mac. Microsoft has previously promised Skype integration for its Outlook.com web email client which will likely debut in the coming weeks to support video calling.
