Rhapsody plays catch-up with Spotify, launching in 16 European countries by Q2

Rhapsody may be the longest running music subscription service in the US, but the company has established virtually no presence internationally — until now. CEO John Irvine today told GigaOm that the streaming platform will be launching in 16 European countries by the second quarter of this year, though he apparently didn’t reveal which specific nations are on the rollout list. It’s the first significant expansion for Rhapsody, although the company operates as Napster (which it acquired in 2011) throughout the UK and Germany. But if Rhapsody hopes to slow down Spotify’s momentum both at home and abroad, it will need to continue spreading across the global map.
