AT&T announced Screen Pack today, a $5 per month add-on for subscribers of its U-verse TV service that offers access to a streaming library of movies “all without having to rent DVDs.” If that sounds familiar, that’s because it’s is: Screen Pack is effectively a low-cost competitor to services like Netflix, Amazon, and Redbox Instant, allowing customers to watch titles on their TVs, tablets, phones, and online at U-verse’s website. At launch, the service has 1,500 movies in tow — a far cry from Amazon and Netflix, both of which tout catalogs in the five figures, but at a lower monthly cost.

Unlike AT&T’s existing (and no-additional-cost) On Demand service, Screen Pack will focus on movies, which the company says will come from “major studios” with more added on an ongoing basis. A free preview is available today through next Sunday, the 13th.
