New HAL 9000 replica is built from the original movie prop blueprints

ThinkGeek, one of the internet’s foremost purveyors of weird and nerdy accessories for your home and office, has just raised the stakes with a life-sized replica of the HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The site calls it the “most movie-accurate” HAL 9000 replica ever produced — to back that claim up, the designers went back to the movie’s prop blueprints. Perhaps even more important is that the HAL 9000 replica can randomly cycle through 15 different quotes from the movies — and if you talk to it, it’ll respond (though chances are good its response won’t make a lot of sense, unless you’re just quoting lines from 2001 at it. The voice can even be triggered by pointing an IR remote at it and pressing a button. At $499.99, it’s not a cheap replica — but between the custom-ground glass lens, anodized aluminum body, and movie-authentic pedigree, this would be an ideal gift for any 2001 nut in your life.
