Intel has announced a new quad-core 22nm Atom SoC processor called “Bay Trail” that’s expected to be available at the end of 2013. The new processor is designed for use in both Windows 8 and Android tablets, where it will provide better battery life for cheaper prices. Intel has promised twice the performance of its current-generation Clover Trail tablet offerings. Reference designs like those shown above have been built by Compal, Pegatron, and Wistron; they’ll provide a framework for the finished consumer-focused products.

Intel also unveiled the Atom Z2580 (formerly Clover Trail+), an upcoming platform targeted at mid- and upper-tier smartphones compared to the more budget-friendly Lexington chips. The Z2580 will include a dual-core processor and graphics engine, and it’s said to have twice the power of the Z2560 chips it’s following. It should also be available sometime later this year.
