Guillermo del Toro imagines incredible worlds and brings them to the screen. Now, the creator of Pacific Rim, Hellboy, and Pan’s Labyrinth will be bringing his best-selling vampire book series The Strain to a television audience. The series will star House of Cards alum Corey Stoll as the head of the NYC Center for Disease Control, as it tries to stop a viral outbreak of vampirism from taking over the city. FX has ordered 13 episodes of the show, which will debut in July 2014.

The network has seemed pretty sure of the show from the get-go, having hired a writing team to tackle ten scripts before even finishing work on the series pilot, and FX CEO John Landgraf is already talking about a run of 39 to 65 episodes in total depending on the story’s pacing. With Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse running the show, we’re eager to see how the first episodes turn out. “Guillermo’s epic, cinematic pilot for The Strain starts a chilling and compelling story that will upend everything you thought you knew about vampires,” says Cuse, in a press release announcing the show. FX is currently looking for a replacement for John Hurt, who starred as Holocaust survivor Professor Abraham Setrakian in the pilot episode.
