What’s in your bag, Katie Drummond?

What’s in your bag? is a recurring feature where we ask people to tell us a bit more about their everyday gadgets by opening their bags and hearts to us. Show us your bag in this forum post. This week, we’re featuring Katie Drummond.

Advanced warning: this isn’t a tech reporter’s bag. I don’t carry multiple cell phones, nor do I typically have an e-reader, camera, or even a laptop on my person. My friends have long given me a hard time about my stubborn refusal to adapt to new technology, but as I see it, that refusal leaves more room in my bag for day-to-day necessities. Like hair elastics.

MEC Carry-All Shoulder Bag

MEC stands for Mountain Equipment Co-op, a Canadian mecca for outdoor gear that far outdoes its American counterparts in both selection and quality. I bought this bag from a Toronto MEC outpost back in college, and despite accompanying me on daily treks since then, it’s still in tip-top shape.

Other Stuff

American Apparel circle scarf

To know me is to know my scarf. In reality, these scarves are essentially large swaths of fabric you could easily make yourself. Instead, I paid $65 for two at American Apparel and haven’t been seen without at least one since.

The New Yorker

Yeah, yeah, I still read paper magazines. But I am down from a subscription high of around 25 titles each month, and now only get three. I think The New Yorker is the second-best publication in the world, after The Verge, and the story shown in this photo — ”Thanksgiving in Mongolia” — is one you should go read right now.

Asics GEL Cumulus 15

I will die wearing these shoes. Probably at the gym, because that’s where I am before work, and that’s why there’s always a sweaty pair of plastic bag-wrapped Asics in my bag.

iPod Shuffle 2Gb

When Apple eventually stops making the Shuffle, I’ll be the person frantically scouring eBay to buy up several hundred used ones. I acknowledge its flaws, but the iPod Shuffle is lightweight and clips on to my shirt — making it the best thing that ever happened to running, walking, and riding the subway.

Apple iPhone 5C

My partner has been pestering me for months to get a new phone, and when the screen on my iPhone 4 cracked I finally acquiesced. So far, the iPhone 5C is exactly the same as my old phone, except faster, slightly longer, and more blue.

Beauty regime

My morning routine consists of something along these lines: blow-dry hair, apply lip balm, put hair in ponytail, rub sunscreen over face. Do you want skin cancer? No? Then put sunscreen in your bag. I also wear this men’s antiperspirant, because it’s called Power Rush, and I think everyone should start their day with such a feeling.

'Doctor Who' Edition keychain

Ever since I was gifted this Dalek keychain, that annoying process of digging through my shit to get into my apartment has been obliterated. Not because the Dalek does anything special (it doesn’t) but because it’s so damn big.

Matt & Nat Wallet

Another unapologetic promotion of Canadian goods: Matt & Nat is a Montreal-based company that sells beautiful lines of vegan wallets and handbags. This one is around seven years old and fraying a bit, but I can’t bring myself to part with it.
