Shortly after the debut of its second original series House of Cards, Netflix has announced another new show, this time as a partnership with DreamWorks. Turbo: F.A.S.T. is notably the first original Netflix children’s show, joining cult sitcom Arrested Development and Eli Roth series Hemlock Grove among others. It will be based on one of DreamWorks’ most heavily promoted upcoming movies, Turbo, though it doesn’t sound like we’ll see Michelle Rodriguez, Samuel L. Jackson, or some of the other high-profile names from the film continue their work. An animated series based on Turbo was expected last year, but it’s now tied to Netflix for the first time.

In addition to the series, DreamWorks will stream its 2013 films on Netflix

Along with the new show, DreamWorks has announced that it’s adding its feature films — starting with the 2013 lineup — to Netflix, something that could pay greater dividends in the long run. Some DreamWorks titles currently show up on Netflix, but they’re generally spinoffs of core titles.

Netflix has been an early pioneer of original content, and it’s said before it hopes to produce at least five new shows a year, a quota it’s now met for 2013. Competitor Amazon, however, is also pushing children’s shows heavily: it recently greenlit five new series, including one by the co-creator of Blue’s Clues and another produced by The Jim Henson Company. Turbo: F.A.S.T. is set to start streaming in December.
