We didn’t hear much about the PlayStation Plus subscription service at last week’s announcement, but Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan tells the PlayStation Blog that the company hasn’t forgotten it. “We’re not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus,” says Ryan, “but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the PlayStation 4 landscape.” Currently set at around $5 a month, the service gives players discounts on the PlayStation Store, cloud storage for game saves, and a rotating selection of free “instant games” for the PS3 and Vita.

The confirmation isn’t really surprising. Sony has said before that it plans to make every PS4 game available digitally, with a subscription service on the table, and it’s not hard to imagine it being rolled into PlayStation Plus as a variation of the instant games model. In the same interview, Sony said it was not abandoning the PS3 — though it admitted it could be discontinued somewhat faster than the PS2, which is still on sale in some regions — so we could also potentially see three different platforms on Plus at the same time.
