It was the kind of thing you’d hear at the short end of a long day, when the city was thick with the stench of broken promises. Out on the streets, a hundred faces all melted into one, and that’s the way I liked it. It was safer that way. You let people in, you let people through... well, that’s how people got hurt. That’s how people got dead, and I’d had my fill of regret. I’d had my fill a long, long time ago.
