Tonight’s episode of 60 Minutes features a profile of Jack Dorsey, the man who created Twitter in 2006 and now heads mobile payments company Square. In a clip from the interview by Lara Logan, Dorsey talks about how he was inspired to build Twitter after listening in on emergency dispatch communications with a police scanner as a child; Logan says he was “struck by the fact that everyone talked in short bursts of sound.”

“They’re always talking about where they’re going, what they’re doing, and where they currently are,” says Dorsey. “and that is where the idea for Twitter came. Now we all have these cell phones. We had text messaging and suddenly we could update where I was, what I’m doing, where I’m going, how I feel — and then it would go out to the entire world.”
The profile will also detail Dorsey’s eventual ousting from Twitter and the founding of Square. It airs at 7PM ET/PT tonight on CBS.
