Ricoh hasn’t made many noteworthy moves in the camera industry lately, but the recent trend for premium, high-quality compact cameras like the Sony RX100 and Nikon Coolpix A appears to have tempted it back into the arena. The company has form in this area, with its GR Digital series garnering a loyal following in years past — and that series has been rebooted today with the Ricoh GR.
Ricoh GR premium compact undercuts Nikon Coolpix A by $300

From first appearances, the Ricoh GR is almost identical to Nikon’s Coolpix A: there’s a 16.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, a fixed 18.3mm (28mm-equivalent) f/2.8 lens, and a pocket-friendly compact design. However, Ricoh has managed to come in at $300 less than Nikon with the GR: it’ll sell for $799.95, whereas Nikon is asking $1,099.95 for the A. The GR will be released in the US next month.
