Many fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise believe that its 1992 Super NES entry, A Link to the Past, remains the finest game in the series. Nintendo announced that it would be bringing a direct sequel to the 3DS a few months ago, and now the company has released the first gameplay video from the upcoming title. The company has also given it an official title: The Legend of Zelda, A Link Between Worlds, which surely refers to the light and dark worlds that featured prominently in A Link to the Past.

The gameplay is classic top-down Zelda, with many of the sound effects seemingly pulled directly from the SNES title, but there are of course a few new twists. Probably the biggest one is Link’s ability to become a sort of 2D wall painting, which allows him to slip into areas that are otherwise inaccessible. There’s still a lot that will be familiar to Link to the Past fans, though — some of the environments appear to be complete recreations of the older game’s overworld map. We’re not sure why this game didn’t warrant a mention amidst the other games Nintendo announced this morning — if Nintendo’s going to keep remaking its classic franchises, this has to be one of the more exciting entries it has planned.
