The official name of LG’s upcoming flagship handset is the G2, the company announced today. It’s dropping the well-worn Optimus brand, saying “future smartphones in the same series will carry only the G name while the branding of mobile devices that have already been introduced will continue unchanged.” And the Optimus line isn’t the only series of phones to get a name change. LG says that going forward, “LG’s premium 4:3 display smartphones will be rebranded as simply ‘Vu:’.”

From what LG has said so far, we know that the G2 will have a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and rumors point to a 5.2-inch 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel camera. We should get the full details soon enough — the Wall Street Journal reports that LG is unveiling the phone at an August 7th event in New York.
Update: It turns out that the Optimus brand isn’t going away, at least not entirely. A representative from LG tells The Verge that it will continue to use the mark on its F and L series devices.
