Asus announces pre-orders for its $3,499 4K monitor

There are already options on the market for Ultra High Definition TVs, but if you’re looking for a computer display, pre-orders are just opening up now for Asus’s PQ321 True 4K. Barring some unforseen product announcement, it will be the first consumer 4K monitor available for purchase. If you’ve had your eye on the new panel since Computex last month, you might save a little bit of money by moving early given the “introductory” price of $3,499 at Newegg, Amazon, and TigerDirect.

The 31.5-inch monitor has a resolution of 3840 x 2160, giving you four HDTVs’ worth of pixels to play with. It’s also the “thinnest 4K UHD monitor available” according to Asus, measuring 35mm at its thickest point. We had some issues driving the display with an Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro, but the company says you’ll be able to get full resolution at 60Hz with the integrated GPU in Intel’s latest Haswell’s processors, either over DisplayPort 1.2 or through one of the display’s two HDMI ports. The IGZO TFT also reduces power consumption, which is always good. If you’re in the market, the PQ321 is slated for a July 16th release, so you still have some time to clear some space and find $3,499 to spend on a monitor.
