After releasing a preview version of Windows 8.1 recently, Microsoft says it’s ready to deliver a final version to PC makers in “late August.” Speaking at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) on Monday, Windows CFO Tami Reller revealed Microsoft will be finalizing Windows 8.1 in August, simply noting that it will be made available to PC makers (OEMs). Reller didn’t reveal when end users will be able to install the 8.1 update, but machines running on the software are expected to be made available in time for the holidays.

Microsoft spent the majority of the WPC keynote demonstrating the Windows 8.1 update across 8-inch tablets, notebooks, desktops, and even streaming content from a PC to the Xbox One. There were no big surprises in terms of Windows 8.1 features, but the company chose to highlight the upcoming Miracast support that enables an AirPlay-like transmission from devices to compatible displays. The Release to Manufacturing (RTM) date of late August suggests that Microsoft’s 8.1 preview includes the majority of new features and updates that will be made available later this year.
