In 2014, Budapest’s now-abandoned Kelenföld Power Plant will celebrate its hundredth birthday. Built only a few decades after the world’s first power plants opened, its architecture is a tribute to the power of electricity, with beautiful art deco skylights and sweeping staircases. At Gizmodo, Attila Nagy recounts his experience on a tour of the plant, which has been preserved under Hungarian law but will likely never be repaired. The striking photos, however, are the real star of the piece, capturing a place that’s locked away for all but a few lucky tourists and film crews.
