A New York Times profile of Lacey, a 25-year-old woman residing in New Mexico, sheds light on the booming webcam sex industry. Lacey has been working online as a “cam girl” for almost three years, and now makes around $8,000 per month. The industry is estimated to account for more than 20 percent of the pornography business as a whole, with industry heavyweights like Vivid making more than half their money from “interactive entertainment,” a category that includes cam shows. It’s a fascinating profile, which also touches on the seedier side of the business, whereby camming is a new, easy to scale outlet for the sex trafficking industry.
