The waters of Lake Superior are believed to hold some 400 shipwrecks — some discovered, some not. While in rare occasions, finding a ship can be as easy as looking through the lake’s ice at the right time, others take years of methodical research and exploration. BuzzFeed’s Katie Heaney follows three aging wreck hunters as they search for the SS Scotiadoc, a long-lost freighter that sunk in 1953 with a cargo of wheat. Though the group has been looking for the Scotiadoc since 2005, it’s hardly been their only project: earlier this year, they discovered the 100-year-old wreck of the SS Henry B. Smith, which sank during one of the Great Lakes’ biggest storms.
