Fox’s upcoming Batman prequel series has found another villain. The network announced today that Jada Pinkett Smith — who played Niobe in The Matrix sequels — has been cast in Gotham as a gangster boss and nightclub owner named Fish Mooney. Mooney appears to be new to the comic’s canon, and The Hollywood Reporter says that the series will position her as the employer of Oswald Cobblepot — better known as the Penguin.

Pinkett Smith is the biggest star so far

Pinkett Smith is by far the biggest name attached to the project, but it isn’t clear how large her role will be. A number of other cast members — including some recognizable Batman regulars — have also been cast already. The O.C. star Ben McKenzie will lead the series as Commissioner Gordon (just Detective Gordon, at the series’ start). The roles of Alfred and the Penguin have both been cast as well, with Sean Pertwee and Robin Lord Taylor set to play them, respectively. Donal Logue and Zabryna Guevara will both play police officers; and finally, Erin Richards will play Barbara Kean — traditionally a love interest of Gordon’s.

The show is set to consist of hour-long episodes and will reportedly feature a number of other major Batman villains too. There's no word on when Gotham will premiere, but it's sure to be highly anticipated regardless of its cast.
