Delta launches first international flights with Gogo’s Wi-Fi service

After the company set off on a major expansion last year, Gogo’s in-flight Wi-Fi service is being switched on for its first international voyages with Delta today. Two flights — both traveling from the US to Tokyo — are the first to offer passengers access to Gogo’s international Wi-Fi service. The 740-400 jumbo jet is Delta’s first plane equipped with Gogo’s Ku-band satellite service, which serves as the backbone for the international data coverage. Back in December, Gogo received the green light to begin installing its newest satellite technology on 740-400 aircraft, and Delta along with Japan Airlines quickly signed on to offer Wi-Fi services to long-haul travelers.

Delta’s entire international fleet will gradually be upgraded to take advantage of the Ku-band service by the end of 2015. Specifically, all Boeing 777, 767, 747, Airbus 330, and transoceanic Boeing 757 aircraft used for international flights will eventually offer in-flight Wi-Fi. “Gogo has built and operationalized a network that has the ability to provide connectivity related services to Delta’s entire fleet of domestic and international aircraft from regional jets to 777s – almost anywhere they fly around the globe,” said Gogo CEO Michael Small. We wouldn’t expect Wi-Fi for an 11-hour flight to come cheap, but if you can’t bear the thought of going offline for that long, staying connected only requires taking out your credit card.
