A new behind-the-scenes feature from IGN looks at the technology used to create the simians in ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ the sequel to 2011’s reboot of the sci-fi franchise, ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes.’
Watch how motion tracking turns actors into primates for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’
The apes in the new movie, out July 11th, have incredibly realistic facial expressions and body movements due to advanced motion tracking developed by Weta Digital, a New Zealand special effects house.
The actors wore white painted dots on their faces and special suits Velcro’ed with motion trackers in order to capture every nuance. Weta has also improved details like the look of the apes’ fur, which is convincing when damp or dry, in what IGN calls “a quantum leap” for special effects.
Of course, much of the work was done by actors like Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell, who run, jump, and lumber around on set just like apes.
