The Fifth Element isn’t just a movie about the future. It’s a movie about New York, and what happens when one of the world’s largest cities can’t grow outwards anymore and has to grow up. Roads aren’t just roads, they’re mid-air capillaries where cars move like fish from point A to point B. As fanciful as traveling by flying car may seem, walking is still in fashion, and lengthy “skybridges” connect one building to another.
