Hack Week Badge

Welcome to the first annual Verge Hack Week. We're totally blowing up our site: we've given our reporters and editors the entire week to play with new tools and experiment with new storytelling ideas, while members of our amazing product team have gathered in New York to help build all sorts of interesting new things. Learn more.

When my boss Nilay Patel asked me to make stuff for hack week, a compilation of his best camera appearances was my first thought. In the past three years at The Verge, he’s done a lot: from honking horns at CES, to commandeering huge amphibious boats, and even getting ice dumped on his face.

None of these videos are designed to pad out this list to make it seem like I’m not just putting a story on The Verge about how this one time Nilay was in a band called The Heaven Seventies that made the sexiest music video I’ve ever seen. That’s definitely not what’s going on here.

    Interviews

  1. Senator Al Franken

    Senator Al Franken

Senator Al Franken has been one of the most vocal lawmakers on digital privacy as chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law. In 2011, Nilay sat down with the senator to talk about the crazy Carrier IQ scandal, which implicated smartphone manufacturers in a device tracking scheme.

  2. Nilay asks people about Net Neutrality

Nilay asks people about Net Neutrality

What is net neutrality? Is it a place? Is it an idea? Is it a sandwich? Nilay Patel hits the streets of New York City to find out.

  3. Dramatic appearances

  4. Election night: 90 Seconds on The Verge

Election night: 90 Seconds on The Verge

In a blast from 90 Seconds on The Verge and On The Verge past, Nilay demonstrated his electability for election night. Get patriotic.

  5. Farewell CES 2014

    Farewell CES 2014

CES 2014 was a blast for everyone at The Verge. But when we sat down to look at everything we did, nobody seemed more excited than Nilay. He got to honk the horn in the Nest fire truck.

  6. Reports

  7. Dubstep Whiskey

    Dubstep Whiskey

Remember that time Nilay romanced whiskey with dubstep in upstate New York? Yeah, that happened.

  8. Gibbs Amphibious Vehicle

    Gibbs Amphibious Vehicle

And then there was the time Nilay commandered this insane amphibious vehicle. Is it a boat? Is it a truck? Yes.

  9. Bad Boys Reenactments

  10. Ice Bucket Challenge

    Ice Bucket Challenge

Sadly this category only has one entry, but it's a good one. Watch Nilay get iced (is that a thing?) by a devilishly devious expat. At this point in the list, shit is about to get real.

  11. Music videos

  12. Touch My Body (Remix), The Heaven Seventies

Touch My Body (Remix), The Heaven Seventies

Before he became editor in chief of The Verge, Mr. Patel was in a band. The band is called The Heaven Seventies. They made this video.

  13. Coldest Day of the Year (live at Abbey Pub), The Heaven Seventies

Coldest Day of the Year (live at Abbey Pub), The Heaven Seventies

Rock that white suit and shades, Nilay. Rock it hard.

  15. Paper covers rock: The rise and fall of Woodstock Willy

Paper covers rock: The rise and fall of Woodstock Willy

In addition to his musical background, Mr. Patel also dabbled in feature film. Thanks to Kyle Kramer at Vox Media, we're able to offer this exclusive stream of "Paper Covers Rock: The Rise and Fall of Woodstock Willy," a film about a rock paper scissors prodigy.
