Zoetropes are wonderful creations: they’re often beautiful standing still, but when you get them spinning, they turn into proto-GIFs. Artist and Stanford professor John Edmark has created a new twist on the classic zoetrope, 3D printing a series of objects that become morphing blobs when spun at just the right speed —137.5 degrees of rotation paired to a flashing strobe light. He’s also captured the magic on video by setting the camera to a shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second. Many of these sculptures would look great simply sitting on a table, but when you put them into zoetrope mode, they take on an entirely new life.
