Last week, The Verge’s Chris Plante wrote about Joanna Newsom’s new album Divers, and its intense connection to place, specifically, New York City. But this new video for the album’s title track takes place in a much less, err, grounded setting.
Watch Joanna Newsom’s video for ‘Divers,’ directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
The video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, positions Newsom as a kind of higher being, singing while she floats above mountains surrounded by fluffy, colorful clouds. It’s somehow both gentle and menacing. Anderson and Newsom have worked together before: she had a small role in and narrated Inherent Vice, and he directed the video for Divers’ first single, “Sapokanikan.”
