JetBlue now allows free in-flight video streaming for Amazon Prime customers

After being teased earlier this year, Amazon Prime customers can stream video and music aboard any Wi-Fi-equipped JetBlue flight for free, starting this week. The deal allows passengers with an Amazon membership to eschew the $9 per hour fee that JetBlue typically levies for access to the top tier of its satellite-powered Wi-Fi, the one that allows for streaming or downloading content. Non-members will also be able to use the free Wi-Fi tier to pay for and stream anything in Amazon’s video store.

The deal isn’t necessarily a sweeping victory for travelers, considering you have to fly on JetBlue’s planes and pay for the yearly fee for Prime. But it’s better than the deal being offered by Virgin and Netflix, which is similar but temporary. And, considering industry-leader Gogo won’t roll out its own, faster solution until sometime in 2016, it’s a step in the right direction.
