Were you not a fan of Sam Smith’s “Writing on the Wall,” the somewhat overwrought theme song for Spectre? Turns out that very nearly happened — the band was actually asked to write the Spectre theme tune, according to a post on its SoundCloud page. “It didn’t work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much. As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it,” the band says.

You can hear “Spectre,” which is very much in the vein of classic Radiohead piano ballads like “Pyramid Song” and “Videotape,” and does indeed feature Thom Yorke singing “Spectrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre,” below. Then feel free to spend the rest of Christmas Day wondering how on earth Sam Smith got this gig.
