Hulu reportedly lands streaming rights to all 180 Seinfeld episodes

Hulu has struck a deal with Sony Pictures Television to secure streaming rights for classic sitcom Seinfeld, according to Variety. The deal would be one of the biggest streaming acquisitions ever, reportedly coming in at nearly $180 million — just under $1 million for each of the 180 episodes. Deadline, meanwhile, puts the fee at around $700,000 an episode, or about $130 million in total. Hulu is said to be planning an official announcement for Wednesday.

Sony’s own Crackle service offers a few Seinfeld episodes, but not the full catalog. Last month The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon and Yahoo were battling Hulu to the rights for Jerry Seinfeld’s timeless “show about nothing,” with the price per episode set at more than $500,000. Between this and Netflix’s expansive Friends deal, it would seem that ‘90s comedies remain attractive propositions in the digital age.
