Call of Duty: Black Ops III on PS3 and Xbox 360 will be multiplayer only

Back in June Activision announced that the latest Call of Duty game, Black Ops III, would be coming to older hardware but with reduced features. One of the key cuts was that the Xbox 360 and PS3 version would feature a two-player co-op campaign, instead of the four-player version touted for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Now, it turns out, the last-gen version of the game won’t have a story-driven campaign at all.

“The ambitious scope of the 1-4 player co-op campaign design of the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware,” Activision explains. Instead, the game will only feature multiplayer and zombie modes, and no campaign at all. It isn’t the only cut, either. “Fans should note that other features built to leverage the next generation hardware like the new weapon paint shop and the new suite of e-sports tools will only be available on Call of Duty: Black Ops III for PS4, Xbox One, and PC,” the publisher says. The last-gen version will be $10 cheaper and come with a voucher for the original Black Ops.

While multiplayer is a huge part of the Call of Duty experience — just yesterday Activision announced a new global e-sports league for the series — the bombastic campaigns can also be a great deal of fun. Unfortunately, you’ll need the latest hardware to enjoy it in Black Ops III, which launches on November 6th.
