Google’s getting serious about cameras. Again

When it comes to smartphones, great cameras are like great design. Everyone acknowledges their importance, and everyone claims to have the perfect formula, but only very few ever live up to the bluster of their talk. Today Google made the new 12.3-megapixel camera in its two new Nexus phones a priority in its presentation, detailing all the advanced features it has and promising a quality never before seen on a Nexus device. Made by Sony, the new imaging sensor has larger 1.55-micron pixels to capture more light in dimly lit conditions. The Google Camera app is now also faster, and both the Nexus 5X and 6P can record 4K video. The two phones also share a maximum aperture of f/2.0 and a laser-assisted auto-focusing system.Read next: The Nexus 5X review and Nexus 6P review.

Google has provided some of the first images from the new Nexus cameras today, which give a hint at what we might expect. They will surely have been shot with great professional care, and thus can be taken as an indicator of best case scenarios, but still, they provide a glimpse into the future of Nexus imaging.
