Golden Globes 2016: Taraji P. Henson and Gael García Bernal lead this year’s TV acting awards

Despite some stale humor from fourth-time host Ricky Gervais, tonight’s Golden Globes proved they were going to continue the proud tradition of being a favorable awards show for newcomers (last year, Transparent and The Affair both nabbed awards after impressive first seasons). The actors who took home Golden Globes for television performances included several first-time winners like Rachel Bloom in the musical-comedy My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Maura Tierney in The Affair, and Taraji P. Henson in Empire, who reminded us “There is no Cookie without Lucious.” Christian Slater also took home his first Golden Globe for his role in Mr. Robot.

Jon Hamm won his second Golden Globe for Mad Men and decided to reference Chumbawumba. Gael García Bernal won for his performance as an angsty composer in Mozart in the Jungle, while the internet’s favorite leading man Oscar Isaac nabbed a Globe for his run as the mayor of a corrupt Yonkers, New York in Show Me a Hero. And the gleeful cheers of Little Monsters everywhere could be heard when Lady Gaga won for her eerie role in American Horror Story: Hotel. Her excited, sincere acceptance speech was almost as much fun to watch as Henson’s clever and quick-tongued one, which included the pertinent question, “Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe?”
