Microsoft to recall Surface Pro power cables due to overheating concerns

Microsoft is planning to recall a number of Surface Pro power cords following overheating concerns. Channelnomics Europe reports that the software giant will announce a voluntary recall for power supplies for the Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 that were sold before July 2015. Microsoft has confirmed it plans to recall some power cables in a statement issued to ZDNet:

“As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly.”

The Channelnomics Europe report claims Microsoft will announce the recall on Friday morning. Microsoft says it’s planning to provide free power cord exchanges for Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 models sold before March 2015. “This will be a worldwide voluntary recall,” says a Microsoft spokesperson. “The site with more information about the specifics of the recall should be available sometime “shortly.”

It’s not clear how many units are affected as Microsoft does not disclose Surface shipment numbers. While the majority of Microsoft’s Surface Pro tablets will be covered by the recall, the latest Surface Pro 4 device is not affected by the overheating issues.
