The game, which is described as “a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette,” has been streamlined somewhat for mobile, allowing for faster play, and between two and five people can play together across multiple phones (although it appears there’s no option to play together online at present). The mobile version also includes brand new art from Matthew Inman, better known as The Oatmeal, as well as some new cards not available in the physical edition.
Exploding Kittens debuted on Kickstarter early last year, and went on to become both the most funded game on the crowdfunding site, as well as the project with the most backers. Inman created the game with game designers Elan Lee and Shane Small, formerly of Microsoft, and the physical version began shipping to backers in July.
The mobile port was handled by design studio Substantial, and the developers are quick to note that it’s still a work in progress, as several features have been omitted for the initial release. “It’s not quite a cat yet,” the creators explain. “It’s still just a kitten.” For now you can grab the game on iPhone for $1.99 (an Android version is in the works), and for the first few days after launch all in-app purchases are free.
