Sprint has laid off at least 2,500 people, with most of the positions coming from customer service call centers throughout the US, according to Reuters. The layoffs mean that Sprint is completely shutting down four of its call centers, while another two will be scaled back. Customer service jobs account for close to 2,000 of the cut positions, with the remainder coming from positions at Sprint’s headquarters. Sprint had 33,000 employees total at the beginning of the year.

The layoffs have been expected for a while now. After falling into fourth place in the wireless market, Sprint has been trying to dramatically cut costs, looking for ways to save $2.5 billion. Sprint’s parent company said several months ago that thousands of job cuts would be part of its cost savings plan; it’s not clear if this is the final number, but Sprint has said it would finish notifying employees of job cuts by the end of the month. In addition to job cuts, Sprint also has plans to save $1 billion on network costs.
