The wee little EcoSport is Ford’s new small SUV

But you can’t buy one for more than a year

Ford is jumping on the small SUV bandwagon with the new EcoSport, joining wee trucks like the popular Nissan Juke and Jeep Renegade. It’s aimed straight at the active millennial market and Ford says the EcoSport is “fun, capable, and connected.” The car’s tagline is “going small and living big.” Okay then!

The EcoSport is available with a itty-bitty 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder power plant (which includes 4WD standard). Other features include an astounding thirty places to store your stuff, including pockets, bins, and hooks; there’s also a movable floor board in the cargo compartment and fold-flat seats to fit even more stuff.

pockets and bins and hooks, oh my!

It’s got all the tech features you’d expect: an available 8-inch screen complete with CarPlay and Android Auto; the FordPass smartphone app that can remotely start, lock / unlock the doors, see vehicle location, or data like fuel level; and a horizontally swinging tailgate (okay, that’s not really a tech feature).

It all sounds great! What’s not great is when the EcoSport will hit dealers: it’s not expected until early 2018 — that’s right, Ford is introducing a car it won’t actually launch for more than a year. These pictures will have to tide you over until you can go and buy one, or you can just decide to buy one of its myriad competitors that are available today. Whichever.
