While most video games have a story to tell, the best tales are actually woven by the players themselves. It’s one thing to play an online shooter; it’s another for someone to regale the time they randomly lobbed a grenade across the stage and won the game with half a point of life left.
The greatest Pokémon story ever told: Rattata the legend
What follows is, without question, the greatest video game story I have ever read. It’s a story about friendship and loyalty, told within almost 85 Pokémon screenshots. (Pixar, take note.) I first stumbled upon it about two years ago, and in honor of Pokémon’s 20th anniversary, I’m sharing it today.
For the truly uninitiated, the goal of any Pokémon game is to become the best trainer of all time. Typically that involves catching and training many different pokémon, which often have characteristics that are better or worse in certain situations.
Not this trainer. He only needs one friend, and it’s the most unassuming one in the game: a Rattata named The Legend.
