Cult anime series FLCL is returning for two new seasons

Cult anime series FLCL — otherwise known as Fooly Cooly — will be getting two more seasons, according to an announcement from Cartoon Network parent company Turner. The two seasons will include 12 new episodes, and be produced with Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and Japanese anime studio Production I.G. Series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki will also return for the new seasons, which will air on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block.

FLCL is an improbable, minor success story of the 2000s. A frequently melancholy, surrealist coming-of-age story, the original six episodes follow a grade-schooler (Naota Nandaba) who’s smashed in the head by a mysterious woman carrying a bass guitar (Haruhara Haruko) — an event that sparks both robot battles and reflections on puberty. Its weirdness makes it divisive, but it’s also spawned a rabid following.

In its statement, Turner described the sequel this way:

In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.

The next season will premiere in late 2017 or early 2018.
