David OReilly’s first game wasn’t your typical game, it was Mountain, a barely interactive simulator that was like a surprisingly emotional pet rock. His next project is equally strange, but a lot more ambitious: it’s called Everything, and it’s a game where you can play as, well, everything.

"If you can see it, you can be it."
“In Everything, every single thing is a playable character,” OReilly says, “if you can see it, you can be it. The game lets you see the entire universe from the point of view of the thousands of things in it. In other words, there is no distinction between you and the world, or between a level and a character. All these things experience and interact with the world differently.”
OReilly — who is perhaps best known for creating one of the fictional games featured in the Spike Jonze movie Her — describes his new project as “a consciousness simulator and open universe exploration game.” Based on the announcement trailer, it’s not entirely clear what you’ll be doing when you inhabit the body of a paperclip or the sun, but it sure looks pretty. To create Everything OReilly partnered with coder Damien DiFede, while Double Fine Productions will be publishing the game under its “Double Fine Presents” label.
“We developed an entirely new way to create and design levels, which treat objects more like ecosystems, and slightly closer to how they would be in nature,” OReilly says. Everything is due to launch on the PlayStation 4 sometime “in the future.”
