Samsung and Amazon will start streaming HDR10+ content tomorrow

Samsung says it will start streaming videos in HDR10+ on its premium TVs in partnership with Amazon starting on Wednesday, reports Yonhap News. Samsung says it’s the first time HDR10+ content will be available through a streaming service. Around 100 TV shows and movies are available, including The Grand Tour and The Tick with more titles to be added. HDR10+ is available to those with Samsung’s QLED or UHD TVs and Amazon Prime Video.

Samsung and Amazon announced the HDR10+ open standard for high dynamic range video back in April. HDR10+ features Dynamic Tone Mapping, which allows brightness levels to shift depending on whether the particular scene is brightly lit or dark, based on the dynamic metadata attached to a video. We noted at the time that HDR10+ is the fifth major HDR standard competing for industry support. (The other four are: the original HDR10, Dolby Vision, HLG, and Advanced HDR.) Of these, HDR10+ is closest to the closed Dolby Vision spec in capabilities.

In August, Samsung, 20th Century Fox, and Panasonic formed a new partnership and announced they would begin licensing the HDR10+ platform in January 2018. Expect to hear more at CES 2018, which kicks off on January 9th.
