The Super Bowl is not just the biggest football game of the year — it’s also home to a host of new movie trailers, big-money commercials, and pyrotechnic-packed performances. This year’s game featured Lady Gaga and an army of assorted drones, some surprisingly political ads, as well as teasers for Logan, a new Pirates of the Caribbean, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The Super Bowl’s best ads got political, intentionally or not

President Trump’s policies had a completely expected effect on the Super Bowl last night. He managed to push the big game’s ads, and the way fans view them, into the realm of politics. Certainly not every company set out to make a statement, but it was almost impossible to watch some of the biggest ads of the night without viewing them as opposition against the new administration.
The game’s biggest and most controversial spot was likely Budweiser’s, which first appeared last week. Titled “Born the Hard Way,” the ad follows Anheuser-Busch co-founder Adolphus Busch on his journey from Germany down to St. Louis, Missouri, where he meets future partner Eberhard Anheuser over a beer.

The seven best Super Bowl commercials — and the three worst

Super Bowl For most Super Bowls, the commercials are the star of the show. But last night the New England Patriots made a historic comeback, toppling the Atlanta Falcons in overtime. Ad breaks had to be used as they were originally intended: to visit the bathroom, grab drinks, and refill your plate with hot wings, celery, and those tiny hot dogs lathered in BBQ sauce.
And we awoke this morning — perhaps a smidgen hungover from light beer or Hawaiian Punch — without a favorite Super Bowl ad. With the rest of the 9AM water cooler crowd, we checked our watch, searched for something to say, and grumbled about how we can “Never count out touchdown Tom.” We then filed back to our laptops, collected ourselves, and assembled this list.

IntelDrones were a big part of this year’s Super Bowl halftime show for the first time ever. Hundreds of the devices helped this year’s performer, Lady Gaga, kick her show off, presenting a colorful, swirling backdrop as she stood on the roof of Houston’s NRG Stadium. But as Gaga herself seemed to leap from the roof, dropping down to the stadium to start her show proper, her army of drones didn’t follow.
That’s because the drone shows were actually filmed earlier this week, as Intel confirmed to The Verge. That includes Gaga’s intro sequence, which saw her dancing in front of an American flag, and a later 10-second spot that featured the drones as they changed from the Pepsi to Intel logos. Restrictions placed on the area by the Federal Aviation Administration forbid drones from flying within a 34.5-mile radius of the NRG Stadium, in addition to other rules that bar drones from hovering too high, or from doing acrobatic maneuvers directly above hundreds of thousands of people.

Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty ImagesIn a Super Bowl performance that spanned her entire discography, Lady Gaga opened her act with a rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” which has become a popular anthem at rallies protesting President Trump across the country. Standing atop the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, Gaga started the song backed by a massive fleet of drones before leaping onto her stage. It was a stunning start to an over-the-top set that, while not overtly political, was certainly aimed at her political fans.
Tonight’s performance, which included acrobatics, pyrotechnics, and dancers, included such hits as “Poker Face,” “Telephone,” and “Bad Romance.” However, those looking for more of a politically charged show might have come away slightly disappointed. Save for “Born This Way” and the opening cover, there was no speech or visual that could quite compare to Beyoncé’s performance of “Formation” last year.

Airbnb just aired a Super Bowl ad promoting a message of diversity and acceptance, ending with the statement that “the world is more beautiful the more you accept.” CEO Brian Chesky also tweeted a reference to the commercial, as well as an announcement that the company is aiming to provide short-term housing for 100,000 refugees, disaster survivors, and other displaced people over the next five years. Additionally, Airbnb will donate $4 million to the International Rescue Committee over the next four years.
The ad’s message is of course politically charged in the context of Silicon Valley’s response to President Trump’s immigration ban, but Airbnb itself also has its reasons for wanting to portray an image of diversity — research has suggested that some Airbnb hosts discriminate by not accepting black guests based on their names, and that non-black hosts are able to charge more on average.

A new teaser for Logan dropped, set to the song Amazing Grace.
There’s no dialogue in this teaser: just music as Logan accompanies Professor X and the young X-23 as they’re chased by a shadowy corporation. Earlier trailers have prominently featured music, such as Johnny Cash’s Hurt and Kaleo’s Way Down We Go, and this teaser feels particularly effective with the song.

Early during tonight’s game, Google’s ad for the Google Home aired on millions of TVs. We’ve actually seen the ad before: loving families at home meeting, hugging, and being welcomed by the Google Assistant. Someone says “OK Google,” and those familiar, colorful lights pop up.
But then my Google Home perked up, confused. “Sorry,” it said. “Something went wrong.” I laughed, because that wasn’t supposed to happen. I wasn’t the only one.

Days after releasing a cringeworthy Super Bowl commercial starring Justin Bieber, T-Mobile has come out with two new spots ahead of today’s big game — and they’re not that bad! In a 30-second ad called “#BagOfUnlimited,” Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg use a string of weed-related puns to make the case for T-Mobile’s unlimited data plan. The puns, mercifully, are not too strained.
The second spot stars Kristen Schaal in a 50 Shades of Grey-inspired takedown of T-Mobile’s competitors, with the tagline: “Wireless pain is fine… if you’re into that sort of thing.” T-Mobile says it has another ad with Schaal that will air during tonight’s game, so look out for that. Or don’t. There are lots of other things you could do with your time.

Sony Pictures has released its Super Bowl new teaser for its upcoming science fiction thriller, Life. The 30-second spot certainly has an Alien-like vibe as a crew of astronauts are trapped aboard the International Space Station with a deadly alien.
The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Ariyon Bakare as crew members aboard the International Space Station, who receive scientific samples from Mars. As the trailer and science fiction tradition suggests, nothing goes as planned. It’ll be interesting to see if this film can stand on its own, or if it’s just a weird mashup of Prometheus and Gravity.

Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty ImagesThe actual game of football is only part of the attraction of the Super Bowl. The commercials and the event’s halftime show are the other huge draws. With Lady Gaga headlining the event this year, we’re assured that it’ll be an elaborate show, and CNN Tech is reporting that the singer’s performance will include “hundreds — yes, hundreds — of lit-up drones.”
According to sources who spoke with CNN, this is the first time that drones have been incorporated into a Half Time show. The use of the drones had to be cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration, as it has established a “No Drone Zone” in a 34.5-mile radius around the stadium starting today and ending on midnight on Sunday.

Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesRemember the Twilight Zone episode “A Most Unusual Camera,” about a couple who rob an antique store and find themselves in possession of a camera that can predict the future? Personally I don’t think it’s cool for criminals to find such a neat gizmo (even if it eventually kills them all (spoilers)). But the story had a moral: If you can see into the future, you should use your knowledge to gamble and get rich, because life is short and you will inevitably fall out a window in an unexpected and ironic fashion.
Come to think of it, the internet is a little bit like that camera. There are dozens of ways its near-infinite collection of data could make a logical prediction of the future. With that in mind, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling as much internet-sourced material as possible to prophesize the outcome of this year’s Super Bowl — the New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons — and turn what I have in my savings account into a small fortune.
