Footage of the new 3D Sonic game looks awfully familiar

Sonic Forces is the recently revealed title for Sega’s next big 3D Sonic the Hedgehog title. The company has been secretive about the game for nearly a year, after it was first announced under the working title of Project Sonic 2017, but today we’re finally getting a glimpse of gameplay.

The new footage shows off the gameplay for Modern Sonic — as teased in the first trailer. The brief Modern Sonic gameplay clip looks similar to that of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, featuring Sonic sprinting on windy paths, dashing through enemies, and occasionally slowing just enough to perform some tricky platforming. It’s a move away from of parkour and exploration system of Lost World and whatever the hell was going on with the poorly received Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

The trailer suggested Modern Sonic would be joined by a classical take on Sonic. This would seem to align with Sonic Generations, which featured both fully 3D Modern Sonic platforming levels starring the more recent iteration of the character and side-scrolling Classic Sonic stages, featuring the more rotund version of Sonic from the original Genesis box art.

While Sega has yet to confirm if the Classic Sonic character appear or how he’ll function in Sonic Forces, the brief snippet shown off so far feels like a good sign, especially given that Colors and Generations were two of the better recent 3D Sonic games. But as longtime fans unfortunately know, new Sonic games can go from looking “good” to “bad” faster than even the famous hedgehog can move. We should have more details as we approach E3 2017.

Sonic Forces is scheduled to be released on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and PC in late 2017.
