Apple Music’s latest exclusive acquisition is a documentary about Clive Davis

Apple Music has picked up exclusive rights to the documentary Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives yesterday. The acquisition was announced just before the film’s premiere kicked off the first night of the Tribeca Film Festival.

Directed by Chris Perkel (best known for editing Cameron Crowe’s Pearl Jam Twenty), the film is based on Davis’ 2013 autobiography, and follows a half-century of musical history influenced by the iconic label executive — from Aretha Franklin to Bruce Springsteen to Christina Aguilera.

This will be Apple Music’s third exclusive documentary film, following Taylor Swift’s The 1989 World Tour: Live, which premiered in December 2015, and 808: The Movie, a history of the 808 drum machine that debuted on the platform in December 2016.

Apple’s interest in music documentaries is a logical marriage of two of its most public concerns — high-profile music streaming exclusives and, eventually, original TV and film content to compete with the likes of Amazon and Netflix.

In a statement to Deadline, Davis said “Apple is a global innovator that has revolutionized the distribution of music. It is a touching honor to share the music and unique stories that have shaped my career with millions of Apple Music subscribers around the world.”
